Meet Paula Mayer, a dynamic professional with a passion for music. She started working at the age of 18. With a background in both private and partner sales, Paula brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to her role at Schmidt Global Relocations. In this interview, Paula shares her insights, joys and challenges of her professional life.
Paula Mayer began her career with a company in Barcelona, quickly rising to manage their Madrid branch. Despite her success, Paula felt the need for more significant growth opportunities. “I felt I was stuck and was looking for new options,” she recalls. This drive led her to explore roles beyond the small company she started with, eventually landing in the international department where she primarily handles overseas operations.
Paula’s journey in sales has been diverse. She has experience in both private and partner sales, each with its unique challenges. “Private sales differs from partner sales. You must deal with private customers, often unexperienced with international moving. They are often nervous, full of questions and sometimes push to get low rates and are unfamiliar with terminology of the industry” she explains. Partner sales, on the other hand, offer a more streamlined experience. “You communicate on the same level. The moving manager deals with the customer because you deal with the agent and talk in the same business language” This shift allows Paula to focus on building strong relationships and attending conferences where she can meet agents face-to-face.
Paula’s path to Schmidt Global Relocations was paved through her professional network. At her previous company, she provided services for Schmidt and formed close friendships with key people like René, Hans, and Rosanne during conferences. “I made it known I was looking around,” Paula says, which eventually led to her current role at Schmidt.
Paula’s initial months at Schmidt have been promising. Familiar faces from past conferences made the transition smoother. “Work is almost the same, but now I have to keep multiple ropes in the air,” she notes. Despite the familiar work, the scale and complexity of operations at Schmidt present new challenges and learning opportunities.
One of the highlights for Paula: working in the Schmidt offices. “I loved it so much. Being in those locations and learning about the industry and the market. How people work in a company of this size and how the international playing field operates,” she enthuses. However, she sees room for improvement. “They should make offices in Madrid. Schmidt has been growing a lot, but growth brings challenges.”
Paula’s international experience has honed her networking skills. “I got the chance to visit many places in foreign countries. I am good at networking, connections come easy for me,” she shares. For Paula, success in partner sales is defined by offering the best quality and prices and being consistently present and responsive with quotes. At Schmidt, we will watch Paula’s growth with great interest, as she has become an invaluable asset to our team!
