Dutch Habits to keep in mind when you’re moving to the Netherlands

Moving to another country is not exactly an everyday activity. Especially not when it comes to the Netherlands with all its ‘peculiar’ habits. A new country does mean getting acquainted with new customs. What is very normal in the Netherlands might be experienced by you as a culture shock. To ensure your transition to the Netherlands goes as smoothly as possible, I (Louis Henrico* – Sales Consultant @ Schmidt Global Relocations) will guide you through typical Dutch habits so that you have an idea of what to expect when you move to beautiful Netherlands. As they say here in the Netherlands: ‘hup, lees snel verder!’ (Get on with it and continue reading!)

*Louis emigrated from South Africa to the Netherlands to start working at Schmidt Global Relocation. That’s why he knows exactly which Dutch habits to keep in mind when you move to the Netherlands.

Speaking the Dutch Way

Before you start your Dutch adventure, it’s important to know that learning a few Dutch words can earn you some serious brownie points with the locals. One of the most commonly used words is: ‘gezellig’ (cosy). And to top it off, one of the most famous sayings: ‘nu komt de aap uit de mouw’ (now comes the monkey out of the sleeve). You say this when something suddenly becomes clear.

Dutch are very direct and punctual

So, get ready for a different way of communicating. Here in the Netherlands, we’re known for our directness. We say it as it is, and because of that, you always know where you stand. Being on time is not just important; it’s a way of life. If you’re punctual, you fit perfectly into the culture! Whether it’s a business meeting or having a cup of coffee or tea with a friend.

Out and about in the Netherlands? Use Public Transport (OV) or a bike

Navigating through the Netherlands is a breeze. Especially if you embrace Dutch transportation habits. Public transport is well-organized in the Netherlands. Make sure to use it! With your OV-chip card, you can not only take the train or bus but also rent a bike or scooter. How convenient is that? You’ll be at your destination in no time, and usually right on time too.

Biking, biking, and more biking; the Dutch can’t do without it!

Yes, you can even rent a bike to get from A to B. In the Netherlands, the bike is our indispensable companion for almost everything. Whether it’s grocery shopping or a visit to the doctor, we swear by the two-wheeler. So, if you need help transporting your beloved bike – yes, we even take it in the moving van of Schmidt Global Relocations. That way, you can easily bring your faithful travel companion to the Netherlands.

Pay like a local: cash, card, and Apple Pay

Unlike many other countries, you can leave your credit card at home in the Netherlands. Here, we prefer other payment methods, namely: cash, our trusted debit card, or for those who want to pay a bit more modern: Apple Pay. The main thing is always to have your debit card with you. Some shops only accept card payments and not cash. So, always make sure you have your phone (with Apple Pay) or debit card at hand. Whether you’re shopping or enjoying a delicious piece of Dutch apple pie.

Dutch people get ‘Orange Fever’ in April

Arrive around April? Prepare yourself for the Dutch ‘Orange Fever’. On April 27th, we celebrate the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. A national festivity where almost no one is working and looking forward to it. Wear something orange , raise your glass, and enjoy the celebrations during King’s Day in the Netherlands ! And oh yes, make sure not to forget your debit card or cash.

In the Netherlands, we love: sweet, sweeter, sweetest

Sweets play a special role in Dutch eating habits. A common tradition is to start the day with bread and ‘hagelslag’, small chocolate sprinkles that are spread over the bread. And then we have the Dutch love for drop, a peculiar candy with flavors that can sometimes feel like a tasty adventure. Even on King’s Day, you’ll likely start the day sweetly with an orange ‘tompouce’, a traditional pastry you absolutely must try if you live in the Netherlands.

Planning to move to the Netherlands? Maybe our peculiar habits have appealed to you! Moving to the Netherlands means transitioning to a country that is not only charming and well-organized but also brimming with opportunities for personal development.
